Letter from Elder Robert Morton, 01.26.08

Subject: Earth to Supe Puerto!
Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 16:10:03 +0000

Hey Fam!

We have been working it for the past week and are begining to see some positive results from the three weeks of pounding the pavement/ sand. The people here are more catholic than our family was and they aren't even Italian!

Today I had the pleasure of lifting weights for the first time in 7 months! Its cool because it costs $1.50 soles per hour so if I use the gym (which literally is around the corner from us) twice per week its only $3 soles per week! Boy am I weak! My bench plumeted about 100lbs but it's all good.

On a spiritual note we have 4 baptisms scheduled for this saterday so if all goes well we can end this month with 4 baptisms which considering what we had to begin with its a victory for the big guy! My companion reminds me of my brother Jeff so needless to say I am on my best behavior and I pray A LOT!

This is the mission, to adjust to new people, things, and places. I am getting to the point to where I actually like the day to day challenges that we must overcome, not quite there but close. Pray for our investigators they need it because the advesary really works hard on these people leading up to important things such as attending church, and showing up for their baptisms.

So how is the family? Things must be pretty busy because you forgot to write this week. So write me when you can and let me know how everything is going, and I will read it next week.

Love you all and talk to you soon.

Love,

Elder Morton

Keepin it real in Peru!‏
Mon 1/19/09 6:54 AM

Hey Fam!

My week was good. We worked like crazy people. It’s different here, but I like the challenge. It’s pretty much a ghost town where we live but there is a lot of potential in out area in general.

When it comes to the weather it’s a lot like San Francisco, not too hot but when there is sun I get tan real quick! The food is better; at least I get to eat fish in addition to chicken and rice!

We had hot showers for the first week and now the water heater which is this cheap attachment deal broke and now we have no more hot water. It seems to be a theme with me, but its all good because it is a lot more humid here and so it’s a little bit of a relief sometimes.

Our ward is actually not a ward; it’s a branch with about 80 people who show up pretty consistently. The people here are even more Catholic than in my other area in Lima, if that’s even possible!

The business is slow but you guys can persevere with consistent effort over a long period of time, never give up because this business is worth it! Tomorrow is the day Obama gets sworn in so there is hope for a brighter day!

Man the family is getting their behinds kicked. Well let’s keep up the positive attitude, and overcome this trial. Cool. Give the twins ashout out for me! So Alberto knows I’m LDS on a mission and still is willing to talk to us, that's good to hear!

I sent you guys a letter so maybe the positive and frank words might help Rob A focus on what he needs to do to be successful in life spiritually and temporally. I haven’t received that box from December yet because the only time we receive stuff here is when we have interviews with the president and those meetings every change. Oh yes if you could send in one of your boxes toothpaste also as well as the normal protein stuff and batteries, thank you!

How crazy is that?! The whole situation with James and his daughters. Jordan wants to see you guys and Jamie is less interested. The question is what’s the deal? All of a sudden they remembered or were allowed to think of the other half of their family that didn’t exist for 12 years? Lincoln? I can only imagine how they have turned out thus far.

On a positive note you are all in my prayers and please tell the people in Rocklin 2nd and Rocklin 6th wards I appreciate all they have done for me. The letters and packages have been a very nice and uplifting surprise. Also if you can send my love to our family friends such as Kelvin, Jimmie and Futaba, the Sessions, Solomon’s, the Gibson's and everyone who has sent me a word and positive thoughts.

I love you all and pray for your success every day. May these two years be your best two years also!

Love,
Elder Morton

Letters From Elder Morton, 01-12-09

Mon 1/12/09 7:00 AM

Yo Ma!

The picture of Josh and his family is really cool. He will be a great Dad I'm sure of it.

If the medication is $64.00 there it's about three times as much here so it's out of the budget for both of us, so it is what it is. Don't worry if it gets too bad I can always get that hair transplant deal. I know you are always looking out for me but the life of a missionary isn't one of luxuary or good looks it's about service and hard work. I appreciate everything you do for me and the love that you have for me as the best mom I could have but dont worry there are worse things in life than being bald! I am going to read and answer your other emails

Love you, Elder Morton

Todo esta bien en Supe!‏
Mon 1/12/09 8:10 AM

Yo family!

I am about 3 or 4 blocks from the ocean in a province just out side of Lima. It's a lot like San Francisco near the pier. Smells like fish and there is a nice breeze that keeps things from being too hot. It's a fishing town in which people are a little more stable economically so it's a little less depressing. It's weird because there aren't many people in the streets or at home because almost everyone is working in a factory with fish or on a fishing boat, so contacting is different.

I have yet to recieve any boxes but I think this Tuesday when we have our zone meeting I might get those depending on the Elders in the office and if they feel like not being lazy. :-)

As of now I could use body lotion and maybe other things but they don't come to mind. My new companion is Elder Ayala and although I heard he is a arrogant dude he has turned out to be a good guy so far. He is from Lima, Peru and really know his stuff as far as the gospel goes. I hope everyone in California are doing well and if you can tell Alberto why I am here and maybe refer him to that web site you started and someone can get something from it because I can't see it for another year and a half!

Today I sent a letter to you and Rob A(in the same envelope). So you should get that in a few weeks. As always work hard, play hard, and have no regrets! Also if you keep working the business I know that will be a great blessing financially, but the key is not to think like a consumer but a business owner because afterall thats what you are.

I love you all!

From Peru to you,

Elder Morton

Subject: New years was cool and I am alive!
Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2009 14:49:50 +0000

Hey everybody!

Regarding last Monday I wrote you but it was later in the afternoon because Monday is the day we had our multi zones where we say goodbye to those who are finished with their mission/ Christmas party deal.

I wrote you about noon or one on the 29th, so I guess the iffy computer deal here failed me on that day. New years was cool, there were a ton of fireworks and we took picture in crazy yellow hats and 2009 glasses because I guess yellow means good luck or fortune?

Regarding changes those are tomorrow, Tuesday the 6th and I get to go north to a place called Barranca which is all beach. I heard its cool and green, and not to mention HOT! Its all good, at least I get to go to a place that is GREEN and not just rock, dirt and hills! Needless to say I will take some good pictures so you all get a good feel for the area. As of now I have recieved all three pairs of pants and thanks because I will need them! As of now I haven't recieved the box with cookies or those ties and sling shot but we have a change meeting tomorrow near the offices so I will get whatever boxes they have for me as of now, I think.

Rob A needs to work the business consistantly enough so that it becomes profitable, which requires effort but is worth it. Also he should remember he can work the business two ways at the same time: One as a salesman marking the product up to make a profit on each sell and two by adding to his legs ambitious people which will help him a ton in the long run make that money that keeps on coming in more and more every month. In this manner with some focus he will not have to worry near as much about money, also he will get tax benifits for proof of him trying to make a profit as a business owner if he saves his gas and business related expenses receipts. It's all about that 5% thinking.

Wow things are rough huh? I will continue to pray and work harder so you guys get those blessings that I believe you deserve.

Christmas was cool for me I got to chill and take a nap after I talked with you guys and then we joked around with the other missionaries for the rest of the night.

So Joyce called from Texas and wants to write me. Oh thats cool I would love to keep in touch with Joyce, and Semaj! What is the zip code for Semaj?

A final note since you didn't get my last email tell Justin I am proud of him going to Oregon University for his music. It is a great accomplishment and if he continues to work hard and keep his nose clean things will work out well for him. The same goes for Brandon, he is a smart young man and if he focuses his efforts the only limit is those he sets for himself, so in reality there are no limits! He can be whatever he wants to be! The same goes for all of you guys. We set the limits on ourselves. God wants so much more for us than we can even immagine, but we must all remember that we truely are sons and daughters of God, this I know to be true. There is no doubt he is our heavenly father which means there is no limit to what we are capable of. Good or bad, thats the decision.

Much love to you all this New Year and may 2009 be better than 2008!

Love,
Elder Morton

1st Letter From Elder Morton from Lima, Peru, 08.27.08

Hey Mom & Dad,
I have reached my mission home in Lima, Peru and the President and his wife are great!
The Elders are nice & my companion is a good guy from what I hear.
All of your packages made it to the mission home. When I get to my area I will see which ones came. I will write you to confirm. I may or may not email you today but if I can I will. So far so good, I am alive and well.
I am excited to teach the gospel to develop a stronger relationship of Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. It will be hard but I knew that to begin with.
The most important thing is that I concentrate on becoming the best missionary that I can be, so that you all will be blessed spiritually, & temporally, as our faith is tested.
I love you guys and pray for you every day. I know no matter if we work hard with our eyes set on eternal salvation things will work out for the best.
Never give up!
Love,
Rob
